IRS Form W-8BEN

[Reviewed 2/6/2024]

Purpose of the W-8BEN

If you receive funds that are not related to employment but may be taxable, the payer of the funds will request that you complete IRS Form W-8BEN and return it to them

Banks will also have you complete this form to document that you are a nonresident alien and therefore not subject to withholding of taxes related to interest earned. Extra money given by the bank at the time you open your account is considered interest.  IMPORTANT: If your status is nonresident alien, complete the W-8BEN when you open any bank account to avoid having unnecessary taxes withheld. You will give the completed form to the bank.

You may also need to complete this form if you are claiming treaty benefits (this does not include the treaty benefit for students and scholars from India).
