Assessment and Evaluation

All performance assessments in Band 7-9 are formative, as students are assigned a letter grade each term based on overall effort and musical growth. In high school, students are assessed both formatively and summatively throughout the semester.

Ensemble Performance Evaluation Rubric * to be co-constructed *

This rubric will be used to assess ensemble-based performances. This could be based on a public performance, or could also be used as reflection in rehearsal to assess possible areas for growth. The rubric will illustrate three stages of developement: Knowledge (70-79%), Connections (80-89%), and Value and Transfer (90-100%). All other criteria will be co-constructed and agreed upon as a class.

Individual Performance Evaluation Rubric * to be co-constructed *

This rubric will be used to assess individual performances of scales or repertoire. The schedule of these assessments can be found in the course outline. These assessments are most commonly completed in private settings (submitted by video, or performed one-on-one with the teacher) to provide both formative and summative feedback for the performer. The rubric will illustrate three stages of developement: Knowledge (70-79%), Connections (80-89%), and Value and Transfer (90-100%). All other criteria will be co-constructed and agreed upon as a class.

Musician Growth Reflection (formative assessment)

This monthly reflection allows students to set goals with their individual musical development, and reflect on the efficiency and efficacy of their practice routines. It also acts as a check-in opportunity to identify any additional supports that may aid in their development.
