Symphonic Band

General Information

The Symphonic Band is an indoor ensemble that meets as a class during the second and third trimesters. This advanced ensemble challenges members with music in a variety of musical styles while building upon prior musical development of the individual and the ensemble. The Symphonic Band performs through the winter and spring seasons at the Winter Concert, Dinner Theater, All School Band Night, Awards Concert, and the IHSMA Large Group Contest. Members of the Symphonic Band are also required to participate in the Fort Madison High School Pep Band.

Membership

Membership in the Symphonic Band is based on audition. While the band is primarily composed of Junior and Senior band members, Sophomores may also earn a chair through audition. Please go to the following link to read more about audition philosophy. If selected to participate, students are expected to be enrolled in the Symphonic Band Class through the second and third trimester.

Rehearsal Expectations

The majority of rehearsals take place during fourth block as a class. Students should be in their seats and ready to go three minutes after the bell rings so that we can have an efficient and rewarding rehearsal. Specific rehearsal procedures can be found in the Band Handbook. In addition to rehearsal time, students are also expected to practice independently outside of class. This can be done at home, or during free periods of the school day. For tips on practicing, check out the musicianship page of this website.
