Authors often use various rhetorical devices in narratives, as well. In this lesson we'll identify and evaluate the use of rhetoric in a few autobiographies.
"Only Daughter" is a short story by Sandra Cisneros. In this story, the narrator, who is the only daughter in a family of six brothers, reflects on her relationship with her father and the expectations placed on her as a woman.
As you read the autobiography, pay attention to the use of rhetoric.
Throughout the story, Cisneros uses a variety of rhetorical devices to convey the narrator's feelings and experiences. For example, she uses repetition to emphasize the importance of the narrator's role as the only daughter in the family. The phrase "only daughter" is repeated several times throughout the story, showing how the narrator feels both privileged and burdened by this distinction.
Cisneros also uses imagery to create a sense of connection between the narrator and her father. For example, she describes how the narrator's father "puts his hands on [her] shoulders and looks into [her] eyes" and tells her that she is "the only one who can save him." This description creates a sense of intimacy and emotional connection between the narrator and her father, and shows how their relationship is both supportive and complex.
In addition, Cisneros uses rhetorical questions to challenge the reader's assumptions about gender roles and expectations. For example, the narrator asks, "Why do they think a daughter is a lesser son?" This question challenges the idea that daughters are inferior to sons and encourages the reader to think critically about the ways in which gender shapes people's experiences and opportunities.
3.05 Assessment:
Choose one of the following to complete a literary analysis of 2-3 paragraphs. In your analysis, identify at least three rhetorical devices used by the author and comment on how they impact the story. Your response should include a thesis statement, and each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence. Do not simply list the rhetorical devices, but identify and explain them, including how your chosen examples support your thesis statement. Be sure to also include a very brief summary of the story - write as if your audience is unfamiliar with the text. Your discussion of the rhetorical devices should be embedded in your summary and analysis.
