ABCYA is a great online platform that gives students a fun way to reinforce skills. This is a free online program that does not require a log in. Click on the picture to go to the website. We recommend playing any of the blue games for math support.

In first grade we use a lot of manipulatives. These are anything tangible that students can use to make their math learning visual. While we know you may not have all of these items at home, there is an online resource that you can use with your student. Click on the picture and scroll down to see all of the options. If you're not sure what manipulatives to use for a certain activity be sure to ask your teacher.

WRITING NUMBERSDont fret! Writing numbers backwards is common is first grade, but be sure to correct your child when working with them. Also, be sure when writing numbers students are writing them with the correct strokes. Writing should never begin at the bottom. It should always start at the top.

We as adults use the simplest of math every day! When you're using it, let your student do it! For example, when you're walking up the stairs, have your student count them. When you're at a restaurant ask your student to tell you the numbers on the menu. When you see a clock have your student tell you the time. Pull out some change and ask them how much money it is. While driving down the road have your student count road signs and identify the numbers on them. Math is everywhere!

GAMESKiddos love games! Cards are great for a multitude of things. Remember slap jack? Now instead of slapping the jack, slap all of the even numbers or vice versa. Playing war is great for comparing numbers. Want to make it harder? Lay down two cards and whoever has the highest sum wins that round. You can switch it around and subtract the smallest from the largest digit.
