In first grade, we use a standards-based grading system to report student progress. This means your child is assessed on how well they are meeting the Indiana first-grade academic standards throughout the school year.
Our report card will look very similar to the kindergarten report card and will continue using a four-point scale. Each quarter, students are assessed on specific standards that have been taught, practiced, and reinforced in class. This gives you a clear picture of how your child is progressing with grade-level expectations.
Here’s how our scale works:
Meets (4): The child meets grade level standards. They can apply the skill independently and accurately and transfer the skill to new tasks or across multiple opportunities.
Progressing (3): The child is progressing appropriately on the skill or concept for this point in the school year. They are moving toward independence.
Emerging (2): The child needs support on the skill or concept. Their understanding is inconsistent, and they may need prompting or assistance to demonstrate the skill.
Below (1): The child cannot yet apply the skill independently and needs significant help to meet grade-level standards. Staying at this level next quarter means they may be at risk of falling below mastery by the end of the year.
0: Not enough evidence of learning was provided. The student will need to be reengaged in the learning process.
Report cards are available to view at the end of each nine weeks through Synergy. If you have any questions about how report cards work or about your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to ask.
