My practice is about finding the balance between control and the lack of it. Each piece reflects an ongoing dialogue between observation and imagination. I hope to invite viewers to pause, reflect and find a momentary quiet space of their own, achieving a balance of their own.
My work is inspired by the edge of the sea and changing light in the landscape. My gaze is drawn to the horizon and the balance brought by the land, water and sky.Â
Working primarily with mixed media and a muted, limited palette, I play with the shapes and light and attempt to represent what I see in a lightly abstracted and impressionist style. By reducing colours and material choices, I look for texture, movement and atmosphere to develop through gestural marks. These limits allow each piece to develop quickly with intention but without full control.
My creative process is guided more by exploration allowing the materials to provide the outcome. I focus on controlling the process rather than the final image, allowing intuition, chance and imagination to develop. Through layering, constructive deconstruction and responding to what happens, the work becomes more of a record of my experience and enjoyment rather than a predetermined outcome.
