Safety Checks

Safety Checks at Fergusson Intermediate

Before making a teaching appointment, the board must be sure that the applicant is:

    • fully registered as a teacher
    • registered subject to confirmation
    • provisionally registered.

This can be checked at EDUCANZ

Only if the board is unable to appoint a registered teacher, may they consider employing an applicant with a limited authority to teach (LAT).

Note: any untrained or unqualified applicant for a teaching position must obtain a "limited authority to teach" from the NZ Teachers' Council.

All children’s workers need to be safety checked every 3 years. This includes both staff employed and staff engaged in your school or kura, whose work involves regular or overnight contact with children. They are classified as either core workers or non core workers.

Proof of Identity and the Vulnerable Children's Act

  • Proof of identity must be sighted and verified by the Principal. A copy of these should be kept with the employees personal file.
  • Referees must be contacted and the details (e.g. phone number, date) recorded on the Fergusson Intermediate Referee Check form.
