The Simple View of Reading & Scarborough's Reading Rope
According to the Simple View of Reading (Gough & Tunmer, 1986), an individual's reading comprehension is the product of their word recognition and language comprehension. An Individual MUST have both to be a skilled reader.
In 2001, Dr. Hollis Scarborough created the Reading Rope using pipe cleaners to convey how the different “strands” of reading are all interconnected yet independent of one another.
Scarborough's Rope captures the complexity of learning to read. Scarborough's Reading Rope is made up of a language comprehension layer as well as a word recognition layer. When all these component parts intertwine it results in skilled and accurate, fluent reading with strong comprehension.

Text Talk Routine-
Choose 2-3 Tier 2 target words to introduce before reading.
Introduce the words with a graphic organizer, prop, picture or action.
Ask students a few questions about the target words. "Tell me about...." What do you do with ....?"
Read the story or text and pause to ask open-ended questions and bridging questions.
Expand on student responses by rephrasing, elaborating or completing them.
