Assessment Matrix
MATRIX UPDATE & CLARIFICATION:
All Kindergarten students will take STAR Early Literacy during the first Diagnostic Period (August 14th- September 22).
First Grade should use the RAN & ORF assessment. If a student is not ready for the ORF, the recommended assessments would be the PSF (Sound assessment) and the NWF (Phonics understanding). LNF (Letter naming) is similar to the RAN Assessment in looking for rapid auto naming.
Here is a tutorial on Illuminate to walk you through the process.

DESCRIPTION OF ASSESSMENTS
RAN (Rapid Automatized Naming) is used in k & 1st. Screens for the ability to name objects in a quick and automatic manner. “Students slower than average with RAN typically struggle with word-level reading.” -David Kilpatrick Dyslexia Guidelines recommend using objects for the first Task.
LNF (Letter Naming Fluency) LNF is a screener that provides a measure of risk for reading achievement. A Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) score is determined through a LNF Task with distinct cut scores. Knowing letter names is strongly related to children's ability to remember the forms of written words and their ability to treat words as sequences of letters.
PSF (Phonemic Segmentation Fluency) is a screener of phonological awareness. PSF assesses students’ ability to fluently segment two- to six-phoneme words into their individual phonemes. Students who are below cut scores in this assessment would benefit from Phonemic Awareness Activities.
NWF (Nonsense Word Fluency) is a screener of the alphabetic principle. NWF assesses students’ ability to decode words based on the alphabetic principle. Students who score below the cut scores would benefit from systematic and explicit instruction in phonics and kinesthetic phonic activities.
ORF (Oral Reading Fluency)The purpose of an ORF is to capture reading behaviors during authentic reading, document student reading progress, help plan instruction, and collect valuable data. If a student scores below the cut scores in the ORF, tier two assessments are recommended. In order to find where the gap is, you need to go back.

DIBELS Assessment Tutorials: Here are samples from the DIBELS online assessment tool. We do not have this online component but the assessment are the same as the paper version. It is a good overview of the process of each assessment.
