At the start of the 2018-2019 school year, members of FCPS Senior Staff visited our 20 schools to talk with faculties about Youth Mental Health First Aid. School staff who had been certified in YMHFA were recognized and given the option to identify themselves by wearing/displaying a:
Purple Lanyard
Pin
Window Cling
Staff who had been certified in YMHFA were asked to stand and be recognized by their colleagues.
Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Special Education, Frank Finn, explains to school staff about the YMHFA courses.
Next Steps Presented
The following options were presented to staff members during the school visits:
1. If you have been trained as a Youth Mental Health First Aider -
Consider volunteering to wear the lanyard and pin and display the window cling to identify yourself as a Youth Mental Health First Aider to students and staff. Collect these items and sign the sheet today. Be assured that as a YMHFA-certified staff member, you are not expected to perform the role of providing professional counseling or professional risk assessment.
If you volunteer, expect to attend an orientation meeting at school regarding your role:
-a quick refresher on the procedures for YMHFA
-procedures for how to make time to connect with students who seek you out for conversations.
2. If you have never taken YMHFA -
Consider register for a class. The course is free and part of the FCPS professional development plan. (Refer to upcoming classes)
