address and reduce youth mental health stigma

On April 29, 2014, the Mental Health Association of Fauquier hosted a community dialogue. It was through that conversation that the Fauquier community established it's goal:

Address and Reduce the Youth Mental Health Stigma in our Community

That spring, Carolyn Lamm, Supervisor for Student Support Services, and Sallie Morgan, Executive Director of Mental Health Association of Fauquier, wrote a grant proposal for Project AWARE, a federal grant from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) which could be awarded to either Local Educational Agencies (LEA) or State Educational Agencies (SEA).

The proposal outlined the plan to train individuals in “youth mental health first aid,” an evidence-based approach which introduces participants to the risk factors and symptoms of mental health problems, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help youth who are in crisis or experiencing a mental health or substance abuse challenge. Sixteen local agencies submitted letters of support for the proposal.
