The Project AWARE grant requires recipients to reach and train 250 participants in YMHFA in two years.

This was a very lofty goal for a county with a population of our size (~68,000) and a much higher goal, we learned later than the goal designated in applications from many states.

In July 2014, we received a $100,000 grant. Fauquier County Public Schools was the only LEA to receive the Project AWARE grant award in the state of Virginia. The initial term of the grant was for two years, and we were granted an extension to continue progress on our grant goals using our federal funds for a third year. The funds were budgeted so that the YMHFA courses could be provided free of charge for members of our community including FCPS staff.

In the fall of 2014, using Project AWARE grant funds, 10 individuals participated in the high-quality training to become certified YMHFA Instructors. To keep a healthy number of instructors in our cadre, we arranged for training of additional instructors as the project progressed. We also have hosted instructor training for others in the state. In the spring of 2015, we had enough certified instructors to begin offering the YMHFA 8-hour course.
