Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities

Volunteer Hours and Community Service:  Students will be recognized annually after submitting proof of serving at least 75 hours of volunteer service.  These hours are above and beyond the hours that are infused into the FCPS curriculum.  Please see attached document below for the volunteer and service hours record sheet download.

On occasion, questions arise as to what activities can and cannot be recognized as community service.  According to the MSDE Student Service Learning Guidelines:

Most volunteer/community service experiences are appropriate for school recognition.  If you have any concern about appropriateness, please check with your school Service Learning Coordinator.

A few major exceptions include the following:

Religious Organizations- volunteer activity must have a secular purpose and meet a need in the community.  Any volunteer activity whose chief purpose is to convert others to a particular religious or spiritual view and/or which denigrates the religious or spiritual views of others will not be accepted.  Any volunteer activity whose chief purpose is to help prepare and/or participate in the performance of a religious service or religious education activity will not be accepted.

Political Organizations- volunteer activity must occur in a public place under the supervision of an adult.  This includes voter drives, voter participation activities and volunteering at the polls.  Any volunteer activity that is partisan in nature or specific to a single candidacy will not be accepted.  Any volunteer activity involving political fundraising or financial solicitation will not be accepted.

See below for opportunities to volunteer in your community.  See Mrs. Gibson or Mr. Baker for more information

FREDERICK RESCUE MISSION :  therescuemission.volunteerhub.com

Volunteers can help prep meals, pack food bags, pass out groceries, and sort through and organize secondhand clothing.  An orientation is required to serve in specific departments and if you’re looking for an opportunity for the whole family to get involved, volunteers need to be at least 12 years, and minors need to be accompanied by an adult volunteer. Do you have a bigger group or want to mobilize your own organization? Volunteers can also host a drive for non-cash items like coats, clothing, toys and toiletries.

SOPHIE AND MADIGAN’S PLAYGROUND:  sophieandmadigansplayground.com

Sophie & Madigan’s Playground is a volunteer-run nonprofit. For those who want to help keep the playground tidy and inviting to all, the organization has an ongoing need for volunteers to help with playground clean up. Would-be volunteers need to attend a training here as well, whether that’s one of the organization’s scheduled monthly orientations or an individually set up personal one.

COMMUNITY TABLE and FOOD BANK PROGRAMS:  cityoffrederickmd.gov (search Community Table Program).

Food Bank volunteers restock shelves and do other light maintenance, but the main duty is to assemble and distribute boxes of three- to five-day supplies of food for somewhere between 600 and 800 families and individuals every month who are facing financial hardship and can’t afford groceries for themselves.  Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Anyone under 18 needs to be accompanied by a non-staff adult for the volunteer shift.  But unlike other one-off volunteer opportunities, these programs ask for a larger commitment of 12 months, making your holiday service the start of a year-long experience, rather than a brief moment in time.
