Our Culinary Arts program takes part in the SkillsUSA Culinary competition, where the students get the opportunity to compete against other students in the class and from different counties in Maryland. Each student has the chance to show off their knowledge, creativity, and Culinary skills in order to advance to higher levels for a chance to win scholarship money.
Competition Order
Locals. This competition takes place here at CTC. What this competition entails is competing against your fellow classmates on subjects that you have completely learned in class. The students are judged by a select person from the industry selected by Chef to grade the competitors on their skill set in safety/sanitation, presentation, organization, and overall performance. The top 3 students move on to Regionals.
Regionals. This is where the 3 students that passed Locals will compete against students from technical high schools in the surround counties: Allegany, Washington, and Garrett. The location of this competition is sometimes different every year, but is confirmed before the competition. This contest is also judged by select people in the industry selected by the instructors of the combining schools. The top 3 students from this combined group will move on to States.
States. This competition is where the 3 students from Regionals will compete against students from around Maryland. There are 6 regions from around the state that will send their top 3 students from Regionals to compete for the State title. The winner of the State contest will move on to Nationals.
Nationals. This competition is for the sole winner of States where the winners from all the U.S states come and compete in a large venue.
