For the 2026–2027 school year, Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS), alongside middle schools statewide, is partnering with the Bluegrass Esports League to launch Kentucky's first official Middle School Esports League and State Championship.
Last season, with the governance and support of EPIC Esports, Kentucky middle schools successfully introduced their first Super Smash Bros. championship program. However, participating teams competed within a broader regional PlayVS platform, which did not allow Kentucky schools to face one another online during regular-season play—leaving teams to be seeded solely for an in-person state tournament.
This new partnership with the Bluegrass Esports League transforms the competition model by providing direct online intrastate play alongside in-person qualifiers. Middle school teams across the Commonwealth now have an accessible, fully integrated season to compete head-to-head on their journey toward the State Championship.

Game Offerings Breakdown
When communicating with parents and administration, please note how our game titles are categorized:
State Championship Titles: Super Smash Bros Ultimate & Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Regional / Recreational Titles: Minecraft, Rocket League, and Just Dance
Sample Roster & Supervision Framework
With roster sizes growing, we recommend aiming for 10–12 students per day for manageable supervision. Here are two ways you can structure your weekly practices based on student enrollment:
Wednesdays (Mario Kart / Minecraft Focus)
Option A (Varsity):
Varsity (Teams A & B): 10 players total (4 starters + 1 sub per team).
Option B (Varsity + Rec):
Varsity (Teams A & B) Mario Kart: 10 players.
Plus Recreation: Host Minecraft on Wednesdays. Minecraft is student driven with resources and lessons - Very little coach monitoring needed
Option A (Varsity):
Varsity (Teams A & B): 8–10 players total (3–4 starters + 1–2 subs per team).
Option B (Varsity + Rec):
Varsity Smash: 8–10 players.
Recreation: Host Just Dance or Rocket League on Thursdays. Both game titles can be played just for fun to help build interest and skill. Remember Rocket League is a possible middle school state title for next school year.
Next Steps
Take a look at your numbers during the week of October 12th to see what works best for your room setup and equipment.
Don't forget our Coaches Meeting next week! Please come with any questions prepped and ready to go. Thank you all so much for stepping up and guiding our esports athletes this season!
October-March Commitment- (if you qualify for state then season goes until April 21)
Meetings twice a week

Thursday for Competitive Super Smash Bros
Multiple virtual competitions and 1 in-person per season.
Other gaming titles are available if students would like to play/compete including Minecraft, Just Dance, and Rocket League
Must compete in at least 2 gaming titles per session. (Note not every game is offered in-person during each session.)
$800 supplemental position paid for by Technology Department. (certified)
Must submit a team of 2 for the Shoutcasting Challenge
Encourage and prioritize participation from students who may not always feel included in traditional gaming communities, including females, students of color, students with IEPs, and others who are seeking a strong sense of community. Your club should be representative of your school.
Ideal number of student participants is 8-15. Experienced coaches may seek to grow their club to include additional students who have a passion for gaming, but may not want to play competitively.
Competitive teams
Teams should be composed of different students. A student on one team can serve as a sub for another.
State Tournament Titles
Mario Kart- 4 students
Super Smash Bros- 3 students
Bluegrass Regional Title (depending on # of enrolled teams)
Minecraft- 2-6 students
Just Dance- 3 students
Rocket League- 4 students
