FASD uses several cognitive assessments as part of the gifted identification process. Each assessment helps us understand how students think, problem-solve, and learn.
Families do not need to take any action for universal screening.
If additional testing is recommended, you will be contacted directly.
If your student is in 1st grade or 5th grade they will test automatically
The NGAT is used for universal screening of all 1st and 5th grade students.
Measures verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative thinking
Designed to be more equitable for culturally and linguistically diverse students
Uses visual and pattern-based questions, with minimal language demands
The NNAT may be used for younger students (ECE).
A fully nonverbal assessment
Takes approximately 30 minutes
Uses visual directions and images instead of spoken or written language
The CogAT is used for students who are nominated for additional testing.
Available for students outside of universal screening grades
Requires parent consent for testing
Measures reasoning and problem-solving abilities
Important Notes:
Students only take one cognitive assessment per school year
Once a student earns a qualifying score, it remains valid as they move through school
Nomination windows are limited and typically occur in October and February
