In reading workshop we develop our skills that support good reading habits. The readers choose their independent texts, so they get to explore topics that interest them.
Workshop consists of these essential elements - interactive read alouds, a minilesson, independent reading, small group instruction, teacher conferences, and sharing.
An important component is the reading notebook. In the RNB students practice strategies taught in class. They also extend their thinking about their texts through reading entries. The reading entries are the foundation for constructed responses.
Most nights students will be assigned 20 minutes of reading. While they are reading, they should also be jotting to capture their active reading. These jots are the foundation for other assignments and ensure that the students are using strategies to meet challenging text.
Please ask your student about their independent reading. Discussing their texts with you is a great way to practice their skills!
Please subscribe to the classroom via the Remind app. I will often push out pictures from the classroom or reminders about deadlines. Remind is also an efficient method of parent/teacher communication if you prefer to text. To sign up, text the class code @fefbc9c to 81010.
I am reusing the code from last year. If you subscribed to my Remind group last year, you are already included in this class.
I use a points-based system for grading. Readers receive grades for their participation in workshop as well as their reading entries. Their weekly work in their reading notebooks is also assessed.
