Introduction

We offer a broad range of GCSE qualifications at Farlington, which we categorise as follows:

Essential subjects:  English Language (or English as a Second Language), English Literature*, Mathematics and Science (Dual or Triple Award)

Creative, expressive & technical choices:  Drama, Art & Design, Music, Physical Education, Computer Science and Design & Technology

Social science choices: Geography, History, Religious Studies and Business

Language choices: French, Latin and Spanish

Everyone is entered for English Language (*and the majority for English Literature), Mathematics and Science. (Please note that Triple Science candidates will be chosen by the Science Department at the end of the Summer Term, taking into account their performance throughout the year.)

In addition, students will study four subjects from the choices available, giving a total of between nine and 11 GCSEs (depending on whether Triple Science is studied).

Please note that if students are already receiving learning support, they may select this in lieu of one choice, and this will reduce their total number of GCSEs by one.

Remember, the most important thing when choosing GCSEs is to ensure a balanced programme - there is plenty of time for specialisation when students reach our Sixth Form! This means that students need to choose at least one creative, expressive or technical subject, one social science and one language.

If you have any questions about course content or progress with regard to a specific subject, then you are encouraged to contact the member of staff who is responsible for that area of the curriculum, as he or she is undoubtedly the expert. Their name and email address is included at the bottom of the relevant page. Should you wish to discuss academic progress more generally, then please contact Mrs Penny Hart, Head of Senior School, on phh@farlingtonschool.com or Mrs Pippa Adams, Deputy Head, on pa@farlingtonschool.com.
