Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.
Engaging instruction from teachers who use best practices as defined through the WICOR instructional framework to foster 21st Century skills and grow student leadership and independence
Positive building culture that supports student goals, student agency, and maintains high expectations for all students
Shared leadership that ensures strategic planning with a College and Career Readiness mission and vision and uses the AVID Implementation Tool to frequently assess each building's level of AVID implementation
Data-driven systems that support access to rigor for all students, including AVID elective students, and that provide quality, engaging professional development for teachers and leaders
Although AVID teaching strategies are used by teachers and school leaders with all students, the elective class is designed for those with high academic potential who may be first generation college students and would benefit from extra support and opportunities. The AVID Elective is a class offered 7th through 12th grade, and it is a main component of our AVID programming that prepares students with college and career readiness skills and the knowledge to make decisions about life after graduation. AVID has been making a difference in the lives of students across the country for decades, and we are proud to offer this opportunity to Faribault students.
We consider ALL of our students AVID students. However, students who are especially interested in building their college and career readiness and are committed to academic excellence can apply to become part of the AVID Elective in middle school and high school. Students may stay enrolled in the AVID Elective year to year as long as they continue to fulfill certain requirements and expectations. Applications open in the spring for the following school year and occasionally in the winter for a second semester start.
The core requirements and expectations of AVID Elective students are the following:
Earn a GPA of 2.0 or higher for AVID Elective enrollment and maintain 2.5 or higher once in AVID Elective
Demonstrate leadership and good citizenship in and out of the classroom
Maintain consistent attendance, participation, and effort in all classes
Additional consideration may be given to students who are first-generation college students.
