Issue 4

Greetings Diplomats –

This is the fourteenth installment of a monthly update where I will provide direct reflections and information on issues facing our student-athletes. The title is a line from the F&M alma mater.

The goal of this piece is not to review specific game results, but to present an insider’s view of current national trends, on-campus happenings and what we can look forward to next.

What's Trending

  • 477 voting delegates convened at the annual convention to vote on 12 proposals.

  • The biggest change effective August 1, 2023 is the move from 19 weeks as the measurement of the entire competitive and practice seasons for a sport to 114 days.

  • This legislation “establishes a traditional start and end date for fall and spring segments, increases the nontraditional segment interaction from 16 to 24 days, measures the winter sports season by 114 days with the flexibility to use eight days before or after the season, and measures seasons for sports such as golf, rowing and tennis by 114 days.” – ncaa.org

  • For its inclusion policy creation, implementation and education.

On Campus

Equipment Room & Facilities

  • “To everything turn, turn, turn; there is a season turn, turn, turn…”

  • Behind the scenes our equipment room staff seamlessly has transitioned Shadek Stadium from football to lacrosse, as well as the locker rooms in Mayser from fall to spring sports use.

  • It’s no small task with equipment, uniforms and supplies inventoried and assigned for distribution to spring sports that have large roster sizes and require a significant amount of equipment (helmets, shoulder pads, gloves, bats, sticks, balls, goalie and catcher’s gear, etc.), in addition to uniforms and other apparel.

  • Coaches and facilities staff must dedicate an entire day to packing and transporting football equipment from Shadek to Mayser for storage, and packing and transporting lacrosse equipment from Mayser to Shadek for use in their championship season.

  • Additionally, locker rooms are emptied and deep cleaned for use by new teams in the spring semester.

  • We are very grateful for the leadership of Robin Wert-Eller, who in 2020 earned the most prestigious honor and highest award from her profession’s national governing body, the Athletic Equipment Managers’ Association.

New Legislation Discussions / Implementation

  • Administrators, coaches and Student-Athlete Leadership Council will engage in regular discussions this spring on how best to utilize the new NCAA playing and practice season legislation while also listening to the needs and concerns of student-athletes and the potential impact on their experience.
