With One Accord
Lauren Packer Webster, Director of Athletics & Recreation
Greetings Diplomats –
This is the eighth installment of a monthly update where I will provide direct reflections and information on issues facing our student-athletes. The title is a line from the F&M alma mater.
The goal of this piece is not to review specific game results, but to present an insider’s view of current national trends, on-campus happenings and what we can look forward to next.
What's Trending
NCAA Transfer Portal Data
The transfer portal is a digital tool designed to streamline the transfer process and empower student-athlete choice in all three NCAA divisions. When a student-athlete requests to be placed on the transfer portal list, it provides permission for the student-athlete and all coaches to communicate regarding a potential transfer while ensuring that a student-athlete’s current institution cannot deny permission to contact other schools or future eligibility for athletically related financial aid.
The NCAA has tracked data at the Division I level since the transfer portal was created in 2018, and recently released transfer portal data in full transparency to help everyone understand the realities of this new legislative option.
The transfer portal has dramatically changed the way coaches recruit, and the way in which student-athletes view their membership on teams. In combination with new, relaxed rules for eligibility after transfer, student-athletes can more freely explore options that will maximize both their academic and athletic opportunities.
On Campus
Community Service
I had the opportunity to serve alongside students and staff members at Lancaster Habitat for Humanity ReStore
I stocked tile for a few hours and got in a great full body workout as a result! It was fun to share the experience with our students and experience their passion for community service.
EppSPYs
A pre-pandemic tradition and student favorite returned this month. Organized and executed by the Student-Athlete Leadership Council, we celebrated our seniors and recognized award winners with a small luncheon.
Here’s the full list of award winners:
SALC Sportsmanship Award: F&M Softball Team
Athletic Director's Award For Leadership Distinction: Thomas Downs (Football), Allison Franke (Volleyball)
John A. Fry Delphic Society Award: Jamie Belfer (Softball), Tom Graminski (Men's Swimming)
Michael T.M. Karvasales '35 Outstanding Female Senior Athlete: Emily Kitchin, Women's Lacrosse
Edward Garrigues '25 Outstanding Male Senior Athlete: Chris Schiavone, Men's Swimming
The Second Year
As we close out my second year, but first full year of ‘normal’ operations, I remain grateful for this opportunity to serve our students and advance the Diplomat tradition of excellence!
What's Next
Spring Sport Championships
It’s full throttle in May for the Diplomats with teams chasing NCAA championships! Men’s golf is in Florida and women’s lacrosse hosts the first two rounds of its championship bracket in Shadek Stadium.
Hall of Fame Selections
The selection committee will begin review of nominations and deliberate on the class to be inducted at True Blue Weekend in October.
It’s so much fun to learn about past players, their contributions to their teammates and where they are now in life.
Preparation For 2022-23 Academic Year
Athletic administrators often get asked if we work during the summer months and the answer is an emphatic “YES!”
Our daily schedules in the summer remain very busy as we close out the fiscal year, debrief on operations, plan for the upcoming year and implement required changes as a result of new NCAA or conference legislation.
It’s a much needed respite from the frenetic pace at which we must operate in the academic year as we support our Diplomats in pursuit of academic excellence, athletic success and leadership development.
We typically host over 150 home games a year, most of which are on the weekend. In the summer, we look forward to a more traditional work schedule and time with our families to recharge!
