Teaching and learning at Braes High School is firmly based on our moto of "Build Respect and Earn Success". We believe that all pupils are capable of earning success and strive to build relationships to ensure that, as a school community, we work together to gain them this success.
This framework sets out our shared understanding of how best to ensure excellence in learning and teaching across the school community. It has been created in collaboration with learners, staff and parents.
Our learning and teaching framework strives to implement both policy and practice. To maximize learning opportunities and to meet the needs of all learners we have adapted strong principles from Curriculum for Excellence, "Getting it right for every child" and "Teaching Scotland's future".
Looking to educational research and practice we have constructed a framework based on the key strategies of AfL, Skills development and Active Learning.
At Braes High School, significant CLPL has been undertaken by staff to ensure a shared understanding of the important principles within the framework. This has been led by both staff and pupils from within the school.
Bees are characterised by their unwavering commitment to their purpose and their relentless pursuit of it. As such, they serve as an effective symbol for endeavours that thrive on unyielding dedication, such as learning, developing a skill, engaging in physical activity, or becoming a skilled expert. In essence, bees are far from idle; rather, they embody the very essence of industriousness and perseverance. At Braes High School, like a hive of bees, we are committed to our RAP: Rigour, Aspiration and Perseverance.
The Braes Bee Honeycomb
Learners are at the centre of all that we do at Braes High School and therefore are central to our learning and teaching framework. In all aspects of our teaching we are striving to ensure the best outcomes for our young people, developing confident individuals ready to move on to positive destinations after school.
Discussion from across the school community has led us to the following statements concerning what the pupils can expect from their learning experiences within Braes High School.
The relationship between staff and pupils is key to this working well for all and Dlyan Wiliams picture of this relationship is a key driver behind this framework.
Braes High School runs an extensive programme of in-house CLPL sessions. Most recently, staff have led sessions virtually offering their expertise on a range of teaching strategies. The aim of these sessions is to recognise strengths within our current teaching practice and share these across the school.
Session 2021
At the beginning of session 2020, a programme was delivered in response to the Covid-19 pandemic called "Blended Learning". This led with a focus of improving virtual learning and engagement. Our second programme in 2020 focused on "Closing the Attainment Gap" and was delivered with a focus of supporting our most vulnerable learners.
Session 2022
Our most recent programme was called "Promoting Engagement and Attainment in the Classroom". This programme considered a range of teaching strategies with the aim of supporting learner engagement. Our programme ran with a focus of "Planning for Improvement"
Session 2023
Our current programme is called "Braes BEE". This programme focuses on our Braes Learning and Teaching Framework. Our programme between August-October was called "Supporting our Learners".
Session 2024
Across this session, our CLPL programme was focused don 7 key areas; Skills; Differentiation; Learning Intentions & Success Criteria; Higher Order Thinking Skills; Feedback; Revision Techniques and Pupil Voice. Each of these areas are linked to our framework. We had a block for each area whereby this was the focus of our Self Evaluation process and the CLPL offered to staff was directly linked to that area. This also allowed us to evaluate the impact of our CLPL on the learner experience.
Session 2025
This session our focus is on 'Adaptive Teaching'. Adaptive teaching is about teachers' responsiveness and real-time adjustments based on what they see in front of them in terms of how a young person is engaging and learning within a lesson. Our Self Evaluation processes continue to inform the CLPL that we offer to staff and maximise the learner experience.
Videos from the sharing good practice sessions which have been recorded can be found in the relevant CLPL pages of this site.
Our learners have been involved throughout the development of the framework and have created their own version of the Braes Honeycomb.
All young people also have opportunities to provide feedback on their learning experiences that we use to inform our approaches to professionals learning. Furthermore, our Self Evaluation Leaders (young people across a range of year groups) accompany staff during lesson observations to provide a learner perspective.
