Morning Miles is a 3 day per week, PTA sponsored club, available to every student at Washington. Morning Miles provides a positive and healthy opportunity for students to develop a morning routine of physical exercise. Plus, exercise before school helps increase attentiveness and behavior in the classroom.
Doors open at 7:40 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting in September and ending in May. We meet on the field and do some warm up stretches before blowing the whistle to start the laps. Students can come one, two or all three days. We start at 7:40 am, but there’s no rush to be there right at the start, flexibility is the name of the game. Last Lap starts at 8:05 am (those students on the field will continue until they finish the lap in progress), which allows plenty of time before the first bell at 8:15 am. Run, skip, walk, leap, or hop as many laps as you can and earn credit for each lap! Special incentives and making friends along the way are just a few of the great aspects of participating in Morning Miles!
How it works:
Every student in Washington Elementary who signs up here, will be issued a plastic badge and personalized bar code. Morning Miles Leaders and volunteers scan these bar codes when the student finishes each lap around the field. The scans are then uploaded to a program called StrideTrack® where you can login to see your student(s) progress. Badges are kept in an alphabetized organizer by first name hung on the fence by the field.
To login to StrideTrack using a computer:
Go to: StrideTrack Website
Enter the Runner ID which will be emailed to you.
Note: the Runner ID changes each school year so you will need to update your child’s account with the new Runner ID.
To login to StrideTrack using Apple iPad or iPhone:
Download the free StrideTrack® app from the App Store. In the input box, enter the student Runner ID.
Last Lap Dasher
There is a signup sheet to be selected as a Last Lap Dasher. At 8:05am the Last Lap begins by the ringing of our cow bell and the Last Lap Dasher goes around the field with the Last Lap flag. Those students who are still on the field during Last Lap can finish the lap and get credit for it, regardless if the Last Lap Dasher passes them.
NOTE: We will not have Morning Miles if it is raining or if the field is too wet from prior rain/fog. There will be a cancellation notification sent via email.
Rewards for Students
Rewards:
After completing the first 5 miles (25 laps), students will receive a foot charm and lanyard. Each successive 5 miles, students will receive a foot charm, and each 25, 50, 75, and 100 miles will earn a numbered charm. Special monthly charms will be given to students who complete the most miles during each month. Keep an eye on your email for exclusive incentive days to earn extra miles and/or more charms. Rewards are given out around the beginning of each month (for the previous months mileage). Teachers will hand out the rewards in class.
End of Year Celebration:
There will be an awards ceremony to recognize the top runners in each grade, and overall high mileage runners. Each student who runs more than 100 miles will receive a custom Washington Morning Miles t-shirt. An email will be sent out to parents who will be receiving an award at the end of the year celebration. Everyone who participated in Morning Miles is welcome to join!
Morning Miles FAQs
When is Morning Miles?
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 7:40 am to 8:10 am. Students can come one, two or all three days and can arrive anytime between 7:40am – 8:00am. Be sure to pack your child a water bottle so they can stay hydrated. We will not run if it is raining or the field is too wet.
How many laps does it take to run 1 mile?
5 laps around our field equals 1 mile.
Can parents get involved?
Absolutely! You can run, walk or jog with your student or get those extras steps in on your own. Make sure to bring you ID and sign in at the front office, enter through the main double doors, and head directly to the field. If you’d like to volunteer to help, email the Morning Miles Team at runclub@explorerspta.org.
What if my student doesn’t have a badge?
Not a problem. If you didn’t sign up they will get a temporary lap card for that morning. The Morning Miles Team will make them a badge for the next time they come.
