Get ready, Explorers - Battle of the Books is here!
The Battle of the Books program is open District-wide to all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. This is a voluntary reading incentive program for students to come together and demonstrate their abilities by testing their knowledge of the books in a fun, interactive, and lively “battle” event. The goal of the program is to support students in their discovery of a love for reading. We do this by introducing them to quality literature and allowing students to develop friendships through socialization, competition, and mutual respect.
Students will meet at least once monthly, October through March, to discuss the different books on the reading list and prepare for the
3-part trivia school battle. Washington's 4th/5th grade team will compete in a District Battle!
3rd Grade Battle of the Books
3rd grade participating students will meet once a month on a Wednesday from 1:30-2:45pm in the library to discuss books, play games and prepare for battle in the Spring! Please see additional program details below for how to join, meeting times, and the key dates you'll want to mark on your calendar.
Meetings will be held on the following (tentative) dates from 1:30-2:45pm:
*September 30
*October 21
*November 18
*December 16
*January 20
*February 17
Key Program Dates:
By February: Students must read 8 books from the list below to compete in the "Battle".
March 10: Battle Prep Day
March 17: 3rd Grade Battle of the Books competition

4th/5th Grade Battle of the Books
4th and 5th grade students interested in participating in Battle of the Books can REGISTER HERE!
Meetings are held every other Thursday morning (7:40 – 8:10 am), beginning on September 24, 2026, and continuing through January. In February, meetings will be every Thursday until the final meeting on February 25, 2027.
Key Program Dates:
March 1: 15 books read - required to participate in the school battle
March 3: 20 books read - required to be entered in the district team drawing
March 3: School Battle at Washington
March 24: District Battle at Washington
