Washington participates in the Battle of the Books national reading program and hopes all our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will join this great program!
The Battle of the Books program is open District-wide to all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. This is a voluntary reading incentive program for students to come together in the spring and demonstrate their abilities by testing their knowledge of the books in a fun, interactive, and lively “battle” event. The goal of the program is to support students in their discovery of a love for reading. We do this by introducing them to quality literature and allowing students to develop friendships through socialization, competition, and mutual respect.
At the beginning of the school year, students are provided with a list of books and encouraged to read as many as possible. Students who are interested in participating will have until the spring to read as many books as possible on the current year reading list. The 2024-25 reading lists are linked in the participation requirement table below.
3rd graders must read at least 8 out of 18 books by February
4th/5th graders must read 15 out of 28 books by March
Participating students will meet at least monthly to discuss books, play games and prepare for battle. The battle styles include relay, "Family Feud," and writing.
On Battle Day, our 3rd grader students split up into teams and compete against other Washington 3rd grade teams, at which time their BOB journey will come to an end for the school year. Our 4th and 5th grade students will also have a Washington competition. Then select students will have an opportunity to represent our school on the district team. This team will compete against the other RBUSD Elementary Schools. Washington placed 2nd in the District Battle in March 2025.
