Gizmos are interactive, highly engaging inquiry-based simulations. They provide students with hands-on learning opportunities to build problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Gizmos support students in learning difficult concepts by making them visual and relating them to real-life situations.
There are two ways to access Gizmos. The best access point for you depends upon the grade(s) that you teach, and the resources that you are looking to access.
Teachers can access 140 simulations for math and science. All K-12 teachers and students can access the site for simulations and resources aligned to Alberta curriculum. S
With a full-access subscription, K-12 teachers can access the full library of more than 500 simulations for math and science. Teachers can access the supplementary materials such as French and Spanish translations of lesson materials, and additional resources. Subscriptions are complementary for K-6 teachers.
Can Grades 7 -12 teachers and students access Gizmos?
Yes. The New Learn Alberta (NLA) site has 140 simulations accessible to all teachers and students in Alberta. Teachers will require a NLA account. Students can login using the division username and password. Alberta Education has purchased subscriptions for all K-6 science and math teachers. If you are a grade 7 - 12 teacher, please check with your school division to see if you already have a paid subscription or contact our ExploreLearning Account Executive, jessica.barrett@explorelearning.com, for information about Gizmos subscriptions.
There are many ways to use Gizmos. Gizmos can be used for whole group instruction. They can be used for small group instruction, and individually. Gizmos can be used as an introduction to a concept, as a lesson or as a review. Teachers can be creative in how they use Gizmos.
Students can access Gizmos through the New Learn Alberta site or the ExploreLearning Gizmos site.
New Learn Alberta - Each division has a username and password. Students can login with with these credentials.
Gizmos Site - Teachers set up classes and student accounts. Students will login using their teacher’s username, class and their individual password.
No, students cannot see these materials when they log in with student accounts. When links are shared, students must log in to New Learn Alberta or ExploreLearning. Please do not post publicly post or share these materials with students.
