It is the intent of the District to ensure that students who are disabled within the definition of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are identified, evaluated, and provided with appropriate education and accommodation as needed. Section 504 prohibits discrimination against persons with a disability in any program receiving Federal financial assistance. This section defines a person with a disability as anyone who:
1. has a mental or physical impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities, including learning;
2. has a record of such an impairment; or
3. is regarded as having such impairment.
If your child has a disability that may have an impact on his/her ability to carry assigned course work, we would urge that you contact the principal or designee who will review your concerns and determine, with you, what accommodations are necessary and appropriate. All information and documentation of the disability is confidential. No discrimination against any person with a disability will be permitted in any of the programs and practices in the school system.
504 plans are a general education function. In preparation for the 20-21 school year, each school site Section 504 coordinator (Principal or Assistant Principal) will review their assigned students’ existing Section 504 plans and, in collaboration with the student’s general education teacher(s) and when applicable other school staff, determine which listed accommodations or supports continue to be applicable/make sense within the selected instructional model (In-Person or Distance Learning). For those accommodations or supports that are not applicable, or do not make sense within the selected instructional model, the Section 504 coordinator will work with the 504 team to determine whether different accommodation(s) or support(s) are necessary for equal access to the student’s curriculum.
504 team meetings will be held over Zoom, until it is safe to resume in-person meeting. Assessments will be conducted following the guidelines set forth by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and California Department of Education.
Inquiries about specific students should be directed to your school principal.
To request an appeal regarding your child's 504 plan, please contact the District’s Student Services Director and 504 Coordinator at (562) 907-5931.
