By fifth grade, students really start to take responsibility for their learning. I give them instruction and allow them to figure out how to accomplish the tasks to the best of their abilities. But my role as their teacher is to really take a back seat and guide when I need to. Students have learned the basics of Google apps and tools and are now utilizing them regularly. They are also helping each other as colleagues often do in the workplace.
Students learn about digital safety in the midst of social media, and the Evesham Police Department assists in how to deal with cyber-bullying. They will also demonstrate fiscal responsibility and budgeting through their first big project in Google Sheets. They do some comparison "shopping" online and work within their budget to accomplish a goal.
Fifth graders also figure out coding puzzles, and delve into a major research project. By the end of the year, they are ready to handle anything middle school has in store for them!
