Story Behind the Hymn: "It is Well with my Soul"

After you have watched the video above, please consider these QUESTIONS for PERSONAL REFLECTION.

Students are encouraged to journal their response.

What is a way you have seen HUMILITY lived out in a person's life who has been fulling surrendering it to God?

In what ways has God been blessing you as you surrender to him?

Throughout this life on earth, we know that there may be times of trial. Often times, this is when our spirit reveals our deepest need for a Savior. In this world, some people search to find ways to try and cope on their own or try and run away to avoid their problems. But, God created us to need Him and be in communication with Him. As we seek out in God's Word, we are reminded of ways God was with those who surrendered to His plan for them. Moses surrendered his insecurity of speaking and Ruth surrendered her fear of the unknown. We also see how He has blessed and equipped the most unlikely to be servant leaders. Not only does Jesus' life represent God's fulfillment to give us our Savior, but Jesus's life also represents what a life of humility looks like when it is fulling dependant upon God's purposes and plan.

In the story behind the song, "It is Well with my Soul, " Horatio Spafford and his wife became very familiar with loss, but they were also very familiar with their need for Jesus Christ. God inspired the lyrics to the hymn as Horatio surrendered his heart to God in a time of grief. Years after their family loss, Horatio and his wife had two more daughters and moved to Jerusalem where they invested in reaching Jewish and Muslim families in need. Today, the Spafford Children's Center is still in operation and has served the needs of many children.

KNOW HE CREATED US TO NEED HIM

KNOW THAT HE CAN USE YOU
