Hello everyone and welcome to the NCC Blog.
This term the Primary 7's will be learning all about
Space and our Solar System in the Infinity Learning Lab.
We will be researching our Sun and all the planets, marvelling at the size of our Solar System and the Universe, sending rockets into "space", understanding what is out there in deep space, aliens, living on another planet and discovering many more interesting things.
I will regularly be posting on this blog so keep checking to see pictures of all the activities that your children have been involved in.
Here are some photographs of the Infinity Learning Lab and the activities your children can explore.
In science, we have been learning about space. We started with the planets where we did research on our GLOW account, learned about the order of the planets and how far apart they are. We paced it out in the playground.
We learned about rockets and did an investigation to launch our rocket into space using film canisters, water and Alka Seltzer tablets.
We designed our own paper rockets in science and used an air pump to shoot them up into the sky.
We learned about the stars in the sky and made a planisphere. We learned about the International Space Station. Use the link below to see when you can see it in the night sky.
Term 2 October to December
This term we are going to be learning about...
Science
Electric Circuits and batteries
Health and Wellbeing
Drug Education - illegal drugs
Religious and Moral Education
Gandhi - Hinduism
Noble Christians - Christianity
In science we have been learning about static and current electricity. We had fun exploring both.
We completed our Electric Circuits block by designing our own circuits and recording them as a schematic diagram.
Term 3 January to April
This term we are going to be learning about...
Science
Climate Change
Health and Wellbeing
Healthy Eating
Religious and Moral Education
Shabbat - Judaism
The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path - Buddhism
In science, through our Climate Change learning context, we have been learning about The Greenhouse Effect and conducted an experiement where we looked at what would happen if all the ice in the world melted (worse case scenario). We learned that the ice in the Arctic was floating on sea water and the ice in the Antarctic was on land. We discovered only the ice on the land would cause the water level in the world to rise.
In science we were learning about renewable energy. In teams we had to design and build a working model of a hydro power station. We were given a bucket and a pipe and had build the turbine. We used a lot of duct tape. Most of the turbines turned when the water flowed from the dam (bucket), down the pipe into the loch (basin).
As part of our Climate Change topic we also looked at windfarms. We made our own wind turbines and had to use hack saws to cut the wood. They worked really well. Whitelee Windfarm has a fabulous visitor centre you can visit for free with lots of interactive games for kids to explore and cafe is good too!
In health and wellbeing as part of our healthy eating block we were looking at food products. We were learning how companies create, develop, market and produce a product. They were given an Apprentice Style Challenge where they had to create a new biscuit. They had to create a company, design a logo, make packaging for their biscuit, make the biscuit (use fondant to decorate digestives), design a poster and make a short commercial for their product. They looked fabulous and tasted delicious. They had lots of fun making the biscuit too.
Term 4 April to June
This term we are going to be learning about...
Science
Our Environment
Religious and Moral Education
Creation Stories - All
Life after death - All
Lord’s prayer - Christianity
Holy Trinity - Christianity
The Chapel - Christianity
Esther and Purim - Judaism
In science, we have been learning about the different parts of a plant and what the function of each part is. We dissected a lily, stuck the plant parts in our jotter and labelled them, then dissected a seed to learn more about it too.
Rory P and Hamish drew beautiful labelled diagrams on the blackboard.
As part of "try a new sports" week we had Greg taking us for rugby. It was fun.
When learning about our science topic "Our Environment" we visited our local dairy farm run by George Strang. We learned all about the farm and even saw a calf being born.
Our final part of our science topic "Our Environment" gave us the opportunity to complete a nature study in our playground. We found lots of micro-habitats, identified 8 different types of trees, collected tiny plants on sticky sellotape and wrote a memories poem.
