Hello everyone and welcome to the NCC Blog.
This term the Primary 5's will be learning all about
Animal Planet (science) in the Infinity Learning Lab.
We will be focussing on the 5 vertebrate groups (mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians). We will be exploring different lifecycles, unique characteristics, the 7 processes of life, survival of the fittest and extinction.
In Religious and Moral Education they will be learning about the Miracles of Jesus (Christianity) and Meditation (Buddhism).
I will regularly be posting on this blog so keep checking to see pictures of all the activities that your children have been involved in.
Here are some photographs of the Infinity Learning Lab and the activities your children can explore.
In science, through our Animal Planet learning context, we were learning about the 5 vertebrate groups of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. We showed our understanding of each group by sorting the animal cards. We researched a question about each animal group, made bird feeders and learned what the 7 processes of life are.
We have been learning about animals who have become extinct like dinosaurs. We made our own 3D Brontosaurus, T-Rex or Triceratops to take home.
Term 2 - October to December
This term we will be learning about...
Science
Mixing and Separating
Health and Wellbeing
Drug Education - Danger awareness
Religious and Moral Education
Miracles of Jesus - Christianity
Yom Kippur - Judaism
Rites of Passage - Hinduism
In Religious and Moral Education we were learning about the stories in the Bible telling of the Miracles Jesus performed. We then could choose whether to dramatise the story of walking on water, turing water into wine or feeding the 5,000.
In science, through our mixing and separating context, Mrs Balloch mixed together a whole lot of weird ingredients to make a "cake". Our challenge was then to separate it all out. We worked as a team.
In science we "grew our own pets". They turned out to be yeast and when we mixed them with warm water and sugar, they ate the sugar and released a gas as a waste. This gas is usually trapped in dough to make the bread rise. We captured the gas by fitting a balloon over the beaker. We had to carefully measure our ingredients so we had a fair test.
In science this week we made raisins dance. We mixed bicarbonate of soda and vinegar to make a reaction and gas was produced. The surface of the raisin was uneven and attracted the bubbles. If enough bubbles were attracted it lifted the raisin up to the surface where some bubbles burst making it fall down again. They looked like they were dancing.
To finish our block of lessons on mixing and separating, we made our own mortar bricks. Some worked better than others as we had to guess how much sand, cement and water we needed to add to make the perfect brick.
Term 3 - January to April
This term we are learning about....
Science
Light and Sound
Health and Wellbeing
Healthy Eating
Religious and Moral Education
David - Christianity
Halal food and responsibilities to the poor - Islam
In science, when learning about sound, we used cup telephones which use vibration to pass on the sound and we used special hearing devices that amplified the sound around us.
In science we were learning about how animals communicate through water, air and solid surfaces. We made animal ears to help us hear better. On our Glow accounts, in our Drive we have been creating a Google Slide to show our research about how animals communicate using sound.
In science, we were learning about how we need light to see colour, how reflections work and how we see colour. We had some challenges to do and we used our eyes see optical illusions. Some of us could see the stereo viewing images but it was really difficult to see the 3D image hidden in the picture.
In health and wellbeing and religious studies, we were learning how food is used in celebrations around the world to mark different festivals. We were looking at the Easter story and tasted hot cross buns. Some of us like them but some did not.
Term 4 - April to June
This term we are learning about....
Science
Electricity
Religious and Moral Education
Joseph - Christianity
Mosque - Islam
Guru Granth Sahib - Sikhism
In science we were learning about static electricity at the start of our electricity topic. We were making lots of static electricity with wands, cloths and balloons.
Next, in science we moved onto current electricity and learned how to make a light bulb light up using crocodile clips and batteries. We also made buzzers sound and motors move an introduced switches to our circuits. We learned what each electrical symbol was and drew schematic diagrams to help us build our circuits.
We were learning about conductors and insulators in our science lesson. We had to test and sort different materials to determine if they were a conductor or an insulator.
