Hello everyone and welcome to the NCC Blog.
This term the Primary 2's will be learning all about
Energy (science) in the Infinity Learning Lab.
We will be focussing on heat, light, sound and kinetic energy and will be constructing simple circuits using light bulbs, motors and buzzers.
In Religious and Moral Education they will be learning about the stories of how Jesus healed people (Christianity) and exploring the festival of Rosh Hashanah (Judaism).
I will regularly be posting on this blog so keep checking to see pictures of all the activities that your children have been involved in.
Here are some photographs of the Infinity Learning Lab and the activities your children can explore.
In science we have been learning about heat. We used tealights to melt the chocolate!
In science we were learning about sound. We made simple musical instruments using elastic bands. We could see it vibrating and hear it when we plucked it. We went outside to hear all the sounds our ears could hear too.
In science we have been learning about heat, light, sound and kinetic energy. We used batteries and connected wires to them. We then connected lights, bulbs, buzzers and motors to make circuits. We were very excited making it all work.
Term 2 - October to December
We are going to learn about...
Science
Topical Science
Health and Wellbeing
Heartstart (lesson 1 and 2)
Religious and Moral Education
Jesus healing
Rosh Hashanah
Naam
Hindu Temple
Nativity
In Religious and Moral Education, were were learning about Christianity and the miracles that Jesus performed. We learned about Jesus healing the 10 leapers, Jesus healing a paralysed man and Jesus healing a blind man. We then had to choose one and act out the story.
In Topical Science we were learning about the engineers and scientists involved with the Mars Robot. We used knex to build our own robots.
Through Health and Wellbeing we have been learning some basic first aid using the Heartstart programme. We revised what we learned in Primary 1 about what we should do if a casualty is conscious and then we learned what to do if a casualty is unconscious (Primary 2 lesson). We practiced putting someone in the recovery position.
Term 3 - January to April
We are going to learn about...
Science
Making Materials Change
Health and Wellbeing
Healthy Eating - Food Pyramid/Eatwell Plate
Religious and Moral Education
Rosh Hashanah
Life of Mohammad - Islam
Abraham and Isaac
In science we were learning about different materials around our classroom and could identify if they were hard or soft, bendy or stiff, light or heavy, rough or smoonth and man made or natural.
In science we were learning what a reversible change was and melted the wax in the tealight. When cold it was solid but when heated it was a liquid. When we poured it out onto the tin foil it cooled back into a solid again. We knew that heat rises so we were very careful when handling the tealight.
In science, we were exploring Making Materials Change and we looked at an irreversible change. We heated up popcorn and once it exploded, it would not go back into its original shape. We then ate it all up.
Mrs Balloch mixed some yummy ingredients to make cake, once heated up in the microwave we discovered that it too was an irreversible change. We ate it all up too!
In science, we also learned that cooling things down changed them too. We looked at water and ice. We then tried lots of different materials to see what was the best at stopping the ice cube from melting. We discovered that when something is cold, if we insulate it, it stays cold for longer. We put lots of clothes on Adam to show that if something is hot, it will stay hot for longer too.
Term 4 - April to June
We are going to learn about...
Science
Food for Survival
Religious and Moral Education
Vesak - Buddhism (12th May)
Vedas and holy scriptures - Hinduism
In health and wellbeing and science, we were learning how we need to eat healthy food to help our bodies grow and that we should try to not eat so much processed food. We were learning about what types of food are produced near Eaglesham and we were learning about dairy farms. We learned what milk could be used for and how we can use cream to make butter. We loved to taste it on a cracker too.
In health and wellbeing we were learning about how food can be split into 5 food groups and how much of each food group we should eat each day. We drew an eatwell plate to show our learning.
In science we had a special visitor to help us plant potatoes. George the Farmer brought special fertiliser to help the potatoes grow big and strong. We are looking after them by watering them when they need it.
In science, as part of our Food for Survival topic, we were learning about caring for animals and giving them the right food. We made bird feeders to take home to feed the birds.
As part of our science topic "Food for Survival" we visited our local dairy farm run by George Strang. We learned all about the farm.
We harvested our potatoes today. We cared for them so well but unfortunately we did not grow many, only 2! We think that we planted them too late or we grew them inside when they should have been grown outside. Mrs Balloch is going to buy some new potatoes from the shops and will cook them for us to eat instead. We are all disappointed but we enjoyed it all anyway.
