Weekly Progress Reports (see sidebar), the Gantt chart, and this Project Management page should be made available in meetings with the sponsor and instructor.
All team members should be able to explain all items on the progress report.
Place a "*" at the beginning of the title of the active week Progress Report (see * in sidebar).
Project Objectives
The goal of this project is to design an inlet flange fastening system to reduce the time and labor required to disassemble and reinstall the inlet flange when replacing a turbine.
High Priority Objectives
Flange must provide an airtight seal (effective against a negative pressure of 1 psi)
Seal must remain airtight without maintenance for at least 1 year
Second Priority Objectives
Reduce the installation time by at least 30 minutes (current installation takes 2 hours with 2 technicians working concurrently)
Design the fastening system to be retrofitted onto preexisting inlets
Other Constraints and Issues
Strict space constraints - refer to CAD for enclosure dimensions
The bottom flange cannot be modified, as it is under design control of a different engineering group
All parts of our design must be easy to access during installation
Sponsor would like to avoid use of powered electric/pneumatic tools in the field
WOW Design Solution
Clamp-based design that uses a solid gasket instead of liquid sealant. Ideally these clamps are accessible from the sides of the device, and technicians do not need to reach over the turbine to interact with them. WOW design would rely on COTS parts to reduce cost.
Risk Reduction Strategy
Use Pugh Chart to analyze different design proposals
Construct test rig to test fasteners and gaskets at the appropriate pressure
