Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Designed, built and tested version 3.2
Works very well. Always dispenses sticker, doesn't stick back. This was achieved by tightening the plate and the bullnose, so no need for a solution to counter electrostatic interactions.
Met with Steve to talk about the sensor that can detect change in intensity of light to know when to stop turning the motor. We can use an LED (emitter) and a detector. We tested it and the change in intensity is of about 500 mV which is very well detected by the sensor. We think that our sponsor would really appreciate for us to have a proof of concept for the mechatronic solution (our WOW solution).
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Box was redesigned and not includes a sliding door at the front and two Z (3 bar) linkages to facilitate the removal of the tape
A manual with instructions for opening/closing loading and removing the tape was made
Bullnose was redesigned to be sharper, fit the box and use an acrylic plate instead of metal. Note: it really isn't hard to insert the tape in the bullnose
Platform was designed and tested: has on layer of acrylic, two layers of soft rubber to absorb the motion of pushing on it with the diaphragm, and one layer of Kapton tape to attract sticker when it's dispensed
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Work on the code for the mechatronic solution (Shenchang)
Design and choose parts for mechatronic solution (Ngoc and Aliya)
Choose motor and coupler for mechatronic solution + circuit (Chris)
Work on DFM for design recommendation (Chris)
Improve current prototype with holders (already designed) to facilitate opening and closing of the box when accessing the tape (Ngoc and Aliya)
DFM for stickers and calculations (Ngoc and Aliya)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
I would be nice if we could in the future have another version with just a button that we push to dispense the sticker (in person - 05/23): we're currently working on the mechatronic solution
Consider having the device on the wall in a hall way on doctors path to exam rooms (in person - 05/23): The device will be mountable to a wall
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Consider 16 mm film projector mechanism for the bullnose (in person - 05/23): we tried to implement it but the problem was that we need the bottom plate to be tight with the 3D bullnose, and that tightness needs to be adjustable at our level. It will be developed in the design recommendation.
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Consider putting a weight inside the box so that people don't lift it when turning the handle (in person - 05/23): We added rubber pads which helps a lot with this issue. For the countertop version, yes, there would be extra weight. But the doctors seemed to idea of having the device on the wall, which would be our plan and doesn't require adding extra weight
How will you address the changing diameter problem? (in person - 05/23): mechatronic solution is being developed
