Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Designed and 3-D Printed a control head of a bronchoscope with a clip on method for a flexible PVC pipe
Beginning initial fabrication of a magnetic pulley system to determine its feasibility and reliability
Determining whether mechanical, magnetic, electrical or a combination of these can be used for control of the distal tip on a bronchoscope’s flexible insertion tube
A design using a butterfly locking mechanism will be tested to determine the amount of tension it can withstand and if it is perfectly sealed
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Designed a control head of a bronchoscope
Assigned individual components for each team member
Detachment
Internal components
Current distal tip control mechanism
Identified which components are in need of risk reduction: detachment & distal tip
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Dr. Somal emphasized the importance of determining a solution for the control of the distal tip. By the end of this week, 5 potential routes of controlling the tip will be demonstrated to the sponsors.
Dr. Somal gave the team the go-ahead to explore alternative imaging materials used. Team can look at other things away from fiber optics
Dr. Somal is looking to get a bronchoscope for the team that they can use to study its components and mechanisms
All functionalities must be accounted for
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Determination of a specific area to do a risk reduction test on
Team identified two important design components that need risk reduction: detachment & distal tip
Deviate away from metal alloys due to their variations in temperature
We have looked into other alternative controls of the distal tip
Risks and Areas of Concern
Rotation of the distal tip and wire tension
Diameter size of the insertion tube
Effect of the detachment and reattachment of a bronchoscope control head aligning with internal components that include the optical parts, working channel, and vacuum
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Flexible bronchoscope not easily obtainable due to its price and availability
Fiber optic camera guide not easily accessible due its rarity and custom design
Schedule
Upcoming milestones include completing the initial design of the control head of the bronchoscope. Another milestone to reach is a fast prototyping model of a magnetic pulley system to estimate if it’s a feasible route for the team to pursue.
