Spring 2012 UCSD MAE 156B
Welded Boss Alternative
Presented by: Cary Choi, Hien Nguyen, Luis Cortez, Jonathan Rodriguez
Objective:
The objective is to design a mounting system that would replace the bosses and have adjustments in the x-y-z directions in order to eliminate any possibilities of rework and thus saving valuable time. Another approach would be to modify the existing bosses so they can also be adjusted. The concepts would be developed into prototypes in order to show proof of concepts for future proposals to Solar Turbines.
The mounting system must meet the following requirements:
Maintain the components leveled at all times
Should not trap any fluids that can be due to component leaks or drainage
Stable and strong enough to withstand a load of 250 lbs – 11,000 lbs (distributed load )
Should have clearance of 0.5-4 inches from drip pan to component
Universal in order to be implemented into their different packages
Final Design Concepts:
Z-Boss and Slider:
Solar Turbines designs and manufactures industrial gas turbines for on and off-shore electrical power generation. In their turbine packages, the base is an angled drip pan that has a 1 +/- 1 degree incline in order for the customer to drain any fluids that leak from the modules. Therefore, because of the angle there is an issue with mounting the modules leveled to the horizontal.
Screw-top piece with 1/2-13 UNC hole at the top and Slider allows adjustment in both the x and y plane
a threaded extrusion of 1-14 UNC that allows
the adjustment in the z-axis.

is bolted through the slot of the slider.
Hemi Mount:

Current Mounting Method:
The solution currently being implemented is the use of protruding, welded bosses to hold up the components inside the turbine packages. A boss by itself is a very simple part that is easy and cheap to produce; the bosses are fabricated out of carbon steel. By using 4 or more bosses together as a base, it creates a stable mounting system that evenly distributes the load from the components on top of it.
