EESW19 Call for Papers and Participation
"Using modern technology for improving establishment statistics"
ENBES - The European Network for Better Establishment Statistics - is announcing the call for papers and participation for the European Establishment Statistics Workshop 2019 (EESW19), to be held on the premises of Bizkaia Aretoa building, in Bilbao, Spain, on 24-27 September 2019, hosted by the Basque Statistical Office (EUSTAT).
Under a broad heading of Using modern technology for improving establishment statistics, EESW19 welcomes contributions from methodologists, academic researchers and private sector professionals on all topics related to statistics about and for businesses and other organisational entities: sample design, data collection, response process, editing and imputation, estimation, modelling, quality assessment, data presentation and dissemination, metadata and process data for establishment statistics, cross-national statistics, and similar. However, we especially invite contributions and considerations on new developments in these overarching areas, which can contribute to addressing some emerging research questions:
Development and implementation of electronic communication
How to reach respondents in businesses electronically?
How to communicate with respondents in electronic questionnaires?
How is electronic data exchange changing data collection from businesses?
How to best communicate with users of establishment statistics?
How to communicate quality of establishment statistics?
Making best use of administrative and alternative data
What are the main developments in methodology related to administrative data?
How to tackle unit errors, coverage errors and measurement errors in administrative data?
How to improve data collection (including data forms) underlying administrative data?
How to combine administrative data with other sources?
How to integrate several administrative sources for production of establishment statistics?
What machine learning techniques have been successfully applied for establishment statistics purposes?
Speeding up production
How to achieve timely response and/or reduce costly nonresponse follow-up?
How do you streamline validation and imputation?
How can nowcasting best be used in establishment statistics, and what sources and methods are available?
How to communicate trade-offs between timeliness and other quality measures?
To organise a session on one of these topics, or to contribute a paper for such a session, there is still time to get in touch with Mojca Bavdaž (mojca.bavdaz[at]ef.uni-lj.si), Paul Smith (p.a.smith[at]soton.ac.uk) or Arnout van Delden (a.vandelden[at]cbs.nl) to discuss its suitability for the programme. You can also contact them with other proposals for session topics and papers, or if you would like to hear about and get connected with other colleagues possibly working on a research topic that you are interested in.
To submit a formal application for presentation, please use online application form, with a deadline of March 31, 2019. At the time of registering, please also send an abstract of max. 300 words - as an attachment in pdf or doc format - to eesw[at]enbes.org, with the subject line the same as the abstract title.
Authors of all accepted abstracts will be requested to submit a draft paper (3-5 pages long), to be circulated to the participants by September 1, 2019, to aid their preparations. Template of author's liking may be used for the paper. Pdfs of final papers will be made available to general audience after the workshop, by publishing them in the ENBES scientific repository.
Key dates

group discussions,
informal occasions for exchanges.
Application
Those interested to present and/or participate in the workshop are asked to fill in an online application form not later than on March 31, 2019. To get in touch with the Scientific Committee to discuss potential contributions, please see the heading Contact, below.
