Use the slides (& audio files below "Introduction to Rome, Italy, and the Romans") to study the Roman Origin story / Myth and complete your work. Identify Roman values based upon the details of the origin myth. Compare and contrast different tellings of the myth including discrepancies or contrary details.
Lectures by award winning Professor Frances Titchener of Utah State University
Utah State Professor Frances Titchener presents the traditional account of Roman History - from the earliest Kings, through the Roman Republic Era, and into the early establishment of the Roman Empire. These lectures won presidential awards and are nationally acclaimed. Listen in to find out about one perspective on this fascinating history. Titchener uses the well known sources including Plutarch (The Parallel Lives of the Ancient Greeks and Romans), Suetonius (The Life of Caesar; The Lives of the 12 Caesars), Edward Gibbon (The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire) all linked here. Note that there is consistent bias amongst these scholars: all of them have aristocratic, privileged, upper class backgrounds and typically fall very much in line with the typical Roman Republican senators &, perhaps, Optimates. Consider their position(s), but also be aware, and perhaps wary, of their bias!

Background # 2: First There Were Kings
Use the slides (and the audio files above "First There Were Kings") to study the early Roman kings and their deeds. Identify Roman values based upon the stories, actions of the kings & the Roman peoples (especially the nobles).
Note that the society becomes divided into classes or castes, particularly Patrician and Plebeians.
