Trade unions aim at organizing particular section of skilled workers (craftsman), from various fields. Belonging to a unions is mechanism improving the conditions of their employment. This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, occupational health and safety standards, complaint procedures, rules governing status of employees including promotions, just cause conditions for termination, and employment benefits. Trade unions often utilize apprenticeships for the purpose of training and recruitment into a particular occupational field. Entrance into an an apprenticeship can be highly selective and competitive. At the community college level, many programs are available for individuals to learn a trade and many offer the opportunity to connect with the corresponding union.
An apprenticeship programs integrate systematic on-the-job training, guided by an experienced master-level practitioner in an occupation, with classroom instruction. The best programs—which provide multiple industries with highly skilled workers who earn family-sustaining wages—are registered with government agencies, operated by sponsors representing labor and management organizations and funded through collectively bargained contributions to tax-exempt trust funds.
