Welcome, Lions!
In RHETORICAL COMBAT, you will do one, simple thing:
Create 1 - 2 sentences that analyzes the rhetorical device(s) used in a particular quote in terms of how it/they function to support a/the claim AND how it impacts the rhetorical situation.
The catch, is:
These sentences need to be packed FULL of as much content as you possibly can fit in them AND be substantial in terms of their strength and insight. These sentences need to speak to all three of the following topics to get the most points:
1) The Claims and Evidence
2) The Rhetorical Situation
3) Rhetorical Strategies / Devices
4) Establish / Develop a logical line of reasoning (in so far as possible in a couple sentences)
The RANGE of each of those topics is huge! There are, for example, so many rhetorical strategies and devices it is absurd to try and list.
In the game, you compete - usually as a group - against other players to pack in the most rhetoric. The winning player/team will win prizes - perhaps, mainly, extra credit.
Strive to make substantive reference to the impact of as many rhetorical devices as you can see in your bit of text (quote) on aspects of the rhetorical situation AND how it/they function to support a claim. The more aspects of the rhetorical situation, the more rhetorical strategies / devices you can identify, and the better you connect it to a claim, the more points you can achieve!
THE ULTIMATE GOAL / OBJECTIVE of this assignment / activity is to develop your sentences so that you apply this to your writing (essays) and gain more points on the essays (FRQs) and, perhaps, get that SOPHISTICATION point. This activity is VERY effective at this goal, and the more you can practice and apply the habit, the better you will score on the FRQs.
