Principles of Animation
Squash and Stretch
Possibly the most important of the 12 principles of animation, I used squash and stretch many times in the animation. It was extremely helpful to depict the movement of the ball and to even show its emotions.
Anticipation
I used anticipation when the ball was jumping off of the diving board. Instead of having gravity its toll on the ball, I instead opted to keep the ball suspended for a few seconds while it looks down at the empty space below.
Staging
I tried experimented with different methods of staging fo this animation. Sometimes, I kept the ball in the center of the screen to show emphasis on the character and sometimes I placed it elsewhere for a different effect. The shot of the ball on top of the diving board is striking because although the ball is not in the center nor is it the largest object in the scene, you can still tell it's the main character. I also placed the ball in a third of the screen for a different method of showing the ball is the main character.
A few honorable mentions for animation principles are:
Arc - The ball needs to follow a somewhat natural arc to show it is bouncing.
Timing - The timing needs to be right for the ball to hit the ground and squash down.
Appeal - The ball needs to have a little bit of character. I do this with small gestures in either the ball itself or just with the goggles it wears.
Exaggeration - There is exaggeration in how the ball jumps and expands. I do not believe a real bouncy ball would stresh that much while falling nor would it bounce as high as it does in the end!
