Update #4
Dear MHS Students,
The announcement of school closure for the remainder of the school year saddens us as we think about what we're all missing in the last several weeks of school. Yes, we're missing traditional curriculum - Math, English, Science, Social Studies, World Language, Wellness, and Art. However, what we're missing most are connections, relationships, and student interactions. What SEL research tells us is that "When kids spend their daytime hours in safe, supportive schools where adults work every day to build strong relationships with every student, they are simply better, more engaged learners." So, we know the next few weeks are going to be hard, but we are here to support you and are here if you need us, so please do not hesitate to reach out!
Sincerely,
The MHS Counselors
Mrs. Worthley, Mrs. Mahoney, Mrs. Lodge, Mrs. Padden, Mr. Ormberg, & Mr. Becker
There is a lot here for seniors this week....
Please be sure to complete the Graduation survey on Naviance. Two important things to note:
1. We will send all final transcripts to the college you are attending based off the information you enter in Step 3 of the survey.
2. Please update the college application decisions accurately, as we use this data for the scattergrams and other features in Naviance for future classes.
To access the Graduation Survey:
Log into Naviance.
Click on the “About Me” tab.
Click on “My Surveys”.
Locate the “Graduation Survey” in either Surveys In-Progress or Surveys Not Started.
Complete the “Graduation Survey”
Step 1 – please indicate your post-high school plans
Step 2 – update all college application decisions
Step 3 – Select the college you plan to attend (*you do not need to complete the scholarship section of Step 3).
Please check out these two new scholarship opportunities!
Tim Gorman Memorial Scholarship
This is a wonderful opportunity for any graduating seniors pursuing a trade or vocational school!
Medfield Democratic Town Committee Scholarship
This scholarship is for students interested in public service and civic responsibility.
Both scholarships are due by next Friday, May 1, 2020.
May 1, known in college admissions circles as “National College Decision Day,” is also affectionately called by others as “Deposit Day.” In reality, it is both. It is the date when at most colleges, admitted students must give notification that they will be attending in order to save their spots. Due to COVID-19, many colleges are moving the deposit deadline from May 1 to June 1 or later. For an updated list of changing deposit deadlines, check out this website. You can also search for updated information on the NACAC site as well.
Some colleges are decreasing their enrollment deposits. For example, Assumption College is decreasing their deposit amount from $400 to $50.
We met with all Juniors on December 10th to discuss future planning. Our second meeting is typically in late March / early April. In an attempt to still deliver the information, we will send out information for you to review at home.
Session 1: Introduction, Resource Review, Application Types, Application Deadlines
Session 2: Parts of the Application: Resume, Recommendations, Essays
Session 3: COVID-19 Impact on Admissions: standardized testing, p/f grading, virtual visits
Session 4: Responsibilities, Next Steps/Timeline, Wrap Up
Please check out Session 2 by Mrs. Mahoney!
You can find previous sessions here!
Due to the extended school closure, all Semester 2 courses are now pass/ fail and will appear on the transcript as P or F and will not count in the GPA. Therefore, if you are interested in retaking a semester 2 course again next year, you will have the opportunity to do so. You must earn a P for a final grade to be eligible to retake a course.
If you are interested in retaking a course, please fill out this google form:
If your mind continues to spiral with unhelpful thoughts, distraction can be an effective tool for nipping it in the bud. It’s important to note that a distraction activity must be very attention absorbing to effectively reduce anxiety. When an activity isn’t working well, spend some time reflecting on why this could be and how you could make it more attention grabbing in future.
Distraction activities have the added benefit of helping you feel happier, more motivated and more energized, as well as combating feelings of boredom.
Low activity and social disconnection are the two most fundamental maintaining factors of low mood, motivation and energy.
While you're stuck at home waiting for travel restrictions to be lifted, we invite you on a virtual visit to each and every one of our Places to Go in 2020.
The Medfield School Counselors are always available to students via phone, or virtual meetings. Please reach out to your Guidance Counselor or Adjustment Counselor should you like to set up a time to speak with someone.
