It has been a great week for sharing progress, thinking about growth, and planning for the future this week, with parent and carer consultations being a particular highlight. Many of the teachers commented that it is one of their favourite parts of teaching - sharing the progress and achievements of each child.
We have been asking children to think of "small acts of kindness" this week, to build on our wider kindness discussion from last week. The staff have been watching carefully and Friday's celebration assembly was a wonderful opportunity to give awards to those children in the school who have been including others, lending a hand, sharing and saying a kind word to one another.
The parent survey that went out on Monday has had over 40 responses; if you haven't managed to share your thoughts and opinions on the school please do complete it. It will present us an opportunity to reflect and think about how to change our practice going forward.
We go into a final week of the first half term, a reminder that the school is closed to children on Friday. The staff will be working that day to enhance our Maths curriculum offer to the children, thinking about how best to encourage problem solving. I hope you have a good weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week.
Kind regards,
Oliver Graves, Headteacher
Thank you to our talented artists and to Mrs Broadbent for representing our school in the recent Cathedral display. Many parents and carers enjoyed seeing the artwork during parent and carer consultations this week, and we look forward to showcasing the pieces in our front foyer soon.
The theme they were given this year was from this verse from the classic English Hymn and Poem "All Things Bright and Beautiful", written by Cecil Frances Alexander:
Each little flower that opens
Each little bird that sings
He made their glowing colours
He made their tiny wings
Last academic year we asked teachers to think about the books that children have access to in class and we enjoyed picking out new books for children to enjoy reading.
We made a decision to buy multiple copies of each text so that children can enjoy reading their books together, forming little reading clubs with one another and discussing the books that they are reading.
Last week, during our staff CPD session, we shared out the books for each year group and found places in our classrooms for each of our new "reading passport" areas.
Do you know anyone who is looking for a Year 3 place for September 2027?
Even if you've had older children go through the school, you are still welcome to come and tour the school with us on the 9th and 12th November to see what we have to offer here at Ely St Mary's.
School Council Applications
Next week we will be inviting children who would like to become members of our School Council to apply.
The School Council is an important group of pupils who help to share children's views, discuss ideas for improving our school and work alongside staff to make a positive difference for everyone.
Children who would like to be considered should complete an application explaining:
why they would like to join the School Council;
what qualities they would bring to the role;
what they'd like to see change at Ely St Mary's
Being a School Councillor is a position of responsibility and commitment. We are looking for children who demonstrate our school values, listen carefully to others and are keen to make our school even better for everyone.
Application forms will be given out next week for children to fill in over the half term, and voting will take place in the first week back.
A huge well done Isaac and Madison for winning this week's award with the Football Fun Factory for their hard work and friendly spirit.
Madison was also goalkeeper in the Year 5 and 6 Girls Inter-School Football Tournament today. The girls did really well winning 4 games, drawing 1 and just 1 defeat. Arianna won the Team Player Award - brilliant!!!
Who was kind in the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand?
Year 5 and 6 reflected on this in the meditative assembly, a small act of kindness from the boy in the story bloomed into a huge act.
We make these posters each week to reflect the values that we are focussing on.
