Brief Intervention (BI) is a short-term program that consists of three to four meetings with a trained YDO support staff, aimed at young people who use tobacco or vaping products in experimental or mild-moderate stages of use. This approach uses motivational interviewing, cognitive behavior therapy and the stages of change model to meet the needs of adolescents. Brief Intervention can be an alternative to suspension.
If a student gets caught on campus with tobacco or vaping products, they may be referred by an administrator to the Youth Development Office to receive Brief Intervention services.
Staff and families can also refer students looking to stop or reduce their use of smoking or vaping.
Students looking to stop or reduce their use of smoking or vaping can refer themselves.
We help students identify the reasons they use, examine the effects of that choice on their lives, and learn to make healthier choices using motivational interviewing.
Motivational interviewing is designed to empower people to change by drawing out their own meaning, importance, and capacity for change.
Brief Intervention promotes social emotional skills and healthier coping options.
Parents/caregivers: if you want to refer your child please contact your school counselor or administrator to connect with a YDO trained staff for intervention services.
