Youth Development provides supports in numerous ways. Scroll bellow to find out more!
In a nutshell, Positive Youth Development is a theoretical framework that focuses on a child’s assets rather than their deficits. It is a way of working with youth that recognizes their full potential, rather than what may be seen as a series of overwhelming struggles or barriers--without disregarding the impacts of those struggles or barriers on youth’s lives.
YDO’s program specialist, Larrah Feliciano, dedicated her career and doctoral studies to Positive Youth Development, and the YDO team lives and breathes the framework in all aspects of our work. In all our activities and programs, we aim to focus on the importance of prosocial behaviors, fostering positive relationships with peers and adults, celebrating a diversity of backgrounds and abilities, and instilling healthy behavioral habits so children can focus on learning and developing great relationships at school.
At the Youth Development Office, our programs include the following. Click on each icon to learn more.
We are committed to spreading awareness about the dangers of tobacco and drug use, and to supporting our youth with prevention and intervention programs.
YDO is on a mission to spread awareness about bullying and help spread kindness among our students.
We are devoted to nurturing affirming and safe spaces in our schools, and to privileging youth voices in our work and services.
Our Peer to Peer prevention education program is both a youth development activity and a prevention activity. Participating teens work together to develop skills in advocacy and learn about the harmful effects of tobacco and vaping.
Our brief intervention is designed for students who are experiencing mild to moderate problems at school or at home associated with smoking and vaping.
Care Pairs is a program designed to bring a diverse group of 6th grade students together to build confidence and self-esteem, practice anti-bullying techniques to become upstanders and allies for their peers.
The Youth Action Project (YAP) is a middle school yearly conference that was founded on the principles of peer leadership. We stress the importance of empowering youth to take action to identify and then work to solve a "problem" or un-met need at their schools.
We provide a variety of courses to our staff to ensure safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments. EGUSD staff, please keep a lookout in PL Essentials for available workshops.
