Second graders will continue to build their Spanish skills this year! They will have Spanish class 4 days a week for 20 minute sessions. Songs, games, dialogues, books and hands-on activities are wonderful ways to encourage students to practice their blossoming language skills.
Second graders are now learning to name the relationships they share with extended members of their family. In addition they are deepening their appreciation for the Central American country of Guatemala. They will be reading a wonderful story entitled "Abuela's Weave". We will be looking at the beautiful tapestries and huipiles woven in Guatemala. Students will then weave a project of their own based on the custom of Guatemalan worry dolls.
Second graders are learning to describe the weather in Spanish. They have also been comparing the weather in Grand Rapids, MI with that of Guatemala City, Guatemala. They have been learning to name the seasons and the months as well. Soon they will come home and share a weather report with you. Stay tuned!
Second graders have now begun a unit on "El Cuerpo"(the body). Students will review past vocabulary, add many new words to their repertoire and practice telling others when they don't feel good and what hurts. This unit is always a favorite as the students "heal" ailments with the help of a mega-sized bandage.

Second graders have been learning to name the items and people in their classrooms and school. They enjoyed singing along to the song "Cosas de la escuela" by Rockalingua. Click HERE to see the video and sing along!
In addition, students learned a poem and practiced reading a book about the fall season. We took time to celebrate Day of Dead as well. Students read a book about a tradition in Guatemala in which loved ones make and fly kites to honor family members who have died. Second graders dedicated a kite of their own to a deceased love one or pet. We tasted a special sweet bread called "pan de muerto" from the Guatemalan bakery. This bread is only made in the days in which Day of the Dead is celebrated, November 1st and 2nd. The majority of the students gave "pan de muerto" a thumbs up!
In our first unit second graders will be reviewing many topics they learned as first graders. In addition they will be learning new ways to talk about themselves and enriching their vocabulary! Students will be making a project about themselves which they will share with their classmates. Your child will be having conversations in Spanish, reading books in Spanish & playing language games to enhance their learning. Stay tuned!
