Fifth graders will continue to build their Spanish skills this year! They will have Spanish class 4 days a week for 20 minute sessions. The Spanish curriculum is based upon the units students are learning in their general ed classroom. Students enjoy learning how to share their knowledge in a second language! Songs, games, dialogues, books and hands-on activities are wonderful ways to encourage students to practice their blossoming language skills.
Students are expected to speak Spanish in class! Making mistakes is an important part of the learning process. Take risks this year, Fifth Graders, and you'll find your ability to communicate in Spanish will improve significantly. You can do it!
Fifth graders are now learning about the fascinating Inca civilization of South America!
Fifth graders are now learning about the Mayan civilization of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador y Belize. The Maya were remarkable! They had a system of writing. They studied astronomy and mathematics, and developed an accurate calendar. In addition the Mayan people were wonderful artists and architects. Students have a new appreciation for this fascinating culture!
Students have been working hard to learn the names, locations and capitals of the 21 Spanish-speaking countries. They have been practicing in a variety of ways. Each student will complete a in-depth study of one of the Spanish-speaking countries and share the information learned with their classmates, their reading buddies, and family at home. In addition they will be conversing in Spanish and recording a Flipgrid. The culmination of this unit will be an international meal shared together in which students prepare and share typical meals from their country of study. It is always a feast enjoyed by all!

Fifth graders are now working to review prior vocabulary and knowledge so that they may better communicate with peers in Spanish. I look forward to watching their confidence and oral proficiency grow this year! Throughout the year students will be recording themselves using Flipgrid. In their first video they will share their likes and dislikes in Spanish. In addition, students are practicing asking questions, listening carefully and responding to their classmates enthusiastically and politely in Spanish. Ask your child to show you his/her video!
