It has been great to welcome the children back to school and in Year 5. All of the children have settled back into school life incredibly well and should be really pleased with their efforts. The first few days have involved organising all of the children's usernames and passwords and getting them all reading books to take home. They have also had the chance to show off their creative writing skills, start looking at place value in maths and explore their topic around WWII. It's been a productive start to the year and many children seemed to getting quite tired by the end of Friday! There is no homework to complete this week but the children should be reading, using online learning platforms like TTRockstars and Spelling Shed and can begin to learn the Year 5 spelling (which can be found on the Year 5 page on the school website). Homework will start next week. Hopefully the children will enjoy enjoy a restful weekend, ready to hit the ground running for their first full week of school in quite some time!
In English, we have introduced our class text for this half term: 'The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips' by Michael Morpurgo. A heart-warming tale of courage and warmth, set against the backdrop of the second world war, about an abandoned village, a lifelong friendship and one very adventurous cat! The children have really been enjoying the story and have created some excellent, emotive work based on the events in the story.
In science this half term, the children have been learning about forces. As part of their work, they conducted an investigation in air resistance. The children worked together to create parachutes and they took turns to drop them from the Year 5 and 6 stairs. After timing the parachutes as they feel, the children were able to identify what makes an effective parachute and how they could improve their designs for the future.
As the children's forces topic came to an end, they were tasked with working in teams to build the most buoyant boat. Looking to create as much upward thrust as possible, the children were given half a metre of tin foil with which to make their vessels. When they were ready, each boat was tested by being placed into water and having weight added on top of it. See some of the pictures below.
Linking with the Year 5 WWII topic, the children have spent the half term creating their own make do and mend sock monkeys. They have all worked incredibly hard on their sewing and stitching skills. The monkeys are almost complete and ready to be released into the world. We look forward to sharing them with you all.
