We kicked off Money week in 5CS Maths with a carousel of money related activities and games to practise our calculation, estimation and counting skills.
Today we visited Metro Bank in Southend to finish off a series of lessons on Money and Managing our Finances delivered by the staff of Metro Bank. Whilst at the bank, we learnt about all the jobs a Cashier does behind the desk, played with the Magic Money Machine and even stepped inside the vault! The trip was very informative and we were lucky enough to meet Metro Man himself and be gifted a Goody bag as we said goodbye. A huge thank you to all the adults who came to help!
If you stepped into year 5 today you'd be forgiven for thinking you were in the Amazon jungle! We have spent the day, brilliantly supported by many adult helpers, carefully sewing together our rain-forest animal soft toys. We have spent many weeks researching and designing these so it was fantastic to see them finally taking shape! Thank you once again to everyone who gave up their time to help us, the children are rightly proud of their efforts and the finished products will be out to view at Open School in the Summer term.
A big congratulations and well done to the children of 5CS who raised a whopping £209 for Cancer Research through their cake sale! We are very proud of your hard work on this and pleased that you have raised so much for such a worthy cause.
This year Edward Francis are entering stories for the Wicked Young Writer Awards. 5CS have been exploring a range of artefacts in order to generate ideas and get our creative juices flowing! We look forward to submitting our entries soon and maybe even winning some prizes!
In Year 5, the children were tasked with helping create and program a space rover to explore a new planet with a dangerously toxic atmosphere. Using the impressive Lego Wedo kits, they spent 2 days completing their task. In that time, the children created a space rover which they had programmed to move. They were also able to include different pieces of technology, such as a motion sensor and a tilt sensor, to further develop their coding skills. At the end of the tasks, the space rovers worked together to successfully complete a mission involving finding and gathering a rare plant species. Great work, astronauts!
Learning about the phases of the moon took a tasty twist as oreos were introduced to the lesson. Using the inside of some oreos, Year 5 recreated the 8 phases of the moon with the filling inside, carefully recreating the shape of the moon in its different stages. The children particularly enjoyed disposing of the moon-like oreos at the end of the lesson, although not many seemed to end up in the bins. How curious!
